A Silent Killer: Tobacco Use Has a Deadly Toll Among Hispanics

Twenty-five year old Anna Luzania knows first-hand the effects of tobacco in the Hispanic Community. As a student at California State University (CSU) at Fresno, she did what many young people enjoying their first years of college do not -- she took action to save the lives of her fellow students and community. Nearly 5.1 million Hispanic adults in the United States smoke, and smoking takes a deadly toll. In 2007, heart disease and stroke accounted for nearly 30 percent of all deaths among Hispanics and more than 27,000 died of cancer.
